Halloween Celebration
by Jiovani del Toro Robles
In a conversational English class, students must apply their learnt knowledge of the English language through activities, scene acting, and dialogue. This month, the students were introduced to vocabulary and history around the International holiday Halloween. For two weeks the students learned basic to intermediate words that applied to the holiday, such as “costumes” or “Jack-O-Lantern” and then practiced this new material through extensive exercise. Much of the work implied required students to be as vocal as possible, as my class in particular requires all the students to be energetic and ready to learn.
On the week of Halloween students earned their right to celebrate the holiday in the manner of American children. Many classrooms decided to decorate with spider webs (another vocabulary word) and paper lanterns, while, of course, students dressed in costumes and masks. Much of the class was overly joyous to dress up in scary or cute outfits that they don’t often get to wear. Without any doubt, Halloween cannot be complete without candy. The students were ecstatic to take the class period practice their newly learned vocabulary through games and activities to earn prizes and sweets.
